I'm a fraud.

My blog is all about how to make WOW gold WITH OUT using Inscription. Well I have to confess that recently I've taken up Inscription on my low level alt. I have every profession covered with my four level 80's, and various 70's except Inscription, so why not? While I don't intend to start a glyph business, as this character will probably never mature to level 80, I do want to talk a little about Inscription.

Inscription a great low level money maker. I'm only at level 150 Inscription and I've already made a few hundred gold off of selling rogue's decks and blue tomes. I havn't sold a single glyph yet but I do have about half a guild bank tab full of them. I got to say looking at a full guild bank of all my own glyphs seems pretty cool. I can actually see running a glyph business and kind of being fun, especially if the profits are as good as I hear.

All I can say is that my first character would have killed to have 300g at level 25.

Ore Galore!

I have mining on three of my level 80's, but I don't actually farm ore. Mining is basically an easy way for my characters to get 60 stamina and a titansteel cool down. I used to farm herbs when my paladin was a herbalist. I never minded farming herbs because there always seemed to be another node just around the corner, also herbs weren’t farmed by tons of people on my server. As far as ore goes, I pick it up when I see it, but I don't go looking for it. This is basically due to ore being farmed like crazy on my server. It's like every node I spot gets taken by someone else before I get there.

Prior to patch 3.3 saronite was basically useless. People would farm saronite, but they were really looking for titanium. The same reason herbs are mostly useless, people are looking for frost lotus. 3.3 let alchemists transmute saronite into titanium. After 3.3, It became cheaper to buy saronite and transmute titanium, then to actually buy titanium ore/bars. One can even make a profit transmuting titanium and reposting the bars on the AH. I figured there would be a few weeks of this until prices of saronite increased, and prices of titanium dropped. While the prices have started to equalize, the best titanium for your dollar is still transmuting ore. Based on higher prices of saronite ore, I need to assume two things. Demand for saronite is up(duh, because of titanium xmute), and supply of saronite is down(duh, people who farmed saronite for titanium no longer need to). This lead me to the assumption that farming of saronite is down over all. This brings me to the point of my post.

For the past week I've been farming ore again. I've only farmed in the early morning and normally not more then 30 minutes. This is my "wake up" time before getting ready for work. I have yet to encounter one other person mining ore in three days. Normally at this time of day there would be at least a few. I'm also running into tons of titanium ore. Over the past three mornings I've farmed 12 stacks of saronite ore and over 2 stacks of titanium ore. What's really nice about titanium nodes is they also have a chance to drop crystallized fire which is needed in titansteel bars, and is a big cost to the final profit (anywhere between 30g-60g). The saronite easily yields eternal earth/shadow. I don't plan on selling these mats on the AH, but I am using them for the production of my three titansteel bars per day, and at the end of the day 30 minutes of farming easily pays for three titansteel bars. The only thing I might have to buy is an eternal fire or two if I get unlucky with the titanium nodes dropping crystallized fire. Even if I don't get enough titanium for three bars (18 ore per day) I can always transmute the saronite ore. Afterwards I send my JC all the extra saronite and gems from the nodes and that off sets the cost of the eternal fire. It looks like im back on track to recoup the cost of my ilvl 264 boe's.

Where did my gold go?

In my previous post I mentioned buying the ilvl 264 boe pants. Well yesterday I also bought the ilvl 264 boe boots. All in all I spent about 20k on two top tier items. (until heroic icc is released). I'm a tank so it is important I have adequate gear. My boots and my legs were both some of my lower tier pieces. (ilvl 232/ilvl 226). These upgrades were pretty massive and although I'm not happy about spending half of my stock pile, I'm fine with the way I spent it.

The major expense for these boots was due to the Primordial Saronite. The demand is still really high for this, and the supply is low. I'm sure after all of ICC is released the demand will go down. My plan right now to recoup some of my cost is to use my three other level 80's to buy Primordial Saronite for frost badges. I should have three Primordials by mid week and hopefully the price hasn't gone down. I'm not buying any with my main as he is keeping all his frost badges for gear. Had I planned ahead I would of made sure to always run the daily heroics/weekly raids on my alts.

The easiest 3k I ever made.

Long story short I bought the ilvl 264 tanking pants. They cost a lot, over 10k. I wanted to wait but I said to myself the only reason to have gold (up to 40k) is to spend it to make the game easier/less grindy. I spent the gold.

Afterwards I felt bad, but seeing as I already spent 12k, and someone was offering the battered hilt in trade for 10k I would go with it if I could talk him down. Why not? WHO CARES ABOUT GOLD!?!?!??!

I offered him 7.5. He declined saying he had a 9k offer already. I came back from two random dungeons and he is still spamming for 10k. I offer him 7.5k. He declines. He counter offers 8k. I decline. The dance continued, and I explained I had time to wait the price was only going to go down. He had no time to wait, the price wasn't going up. Normally no one will take an offer 25%/2.5k lower, but after 2 hours of spamming he was tired. He agreed 7.5k battered hilt.

I posted on the AH right away. 11.5k buy out, 10.5k sell.....buy out with in minutes. 3k in my pocket for almost nothing.

The Great Arrow Debate

There appears to be some debate about the ethics of selling Iceblade Arrows on the AH. What a lot of people have been doing is buying stacks of 1000 arrows and breaking them up into stacks of 100 arrows, and then relisting each stack of 100 arrows at, or around the price of 1000. Due to the WOW AH UI one might mistake buying 1000 for 100 arrows. This would allow the poster to basically profit 1000%. Some are calling this unethical because it requires the buyer to be mislead into a purchase. Some say it is fine because the buyer should have known. Please note I've never sold an arrow, or any ammunitions.....until now.

I'm not really for or against misleading people on the auction house. I see this whole arrow debate as kind of a wash. It's no worse in my opinion then posting ice cold milk for 1g when the vendor sells it for a few silver or something. The buyer didn't know what was what, and because of this they are paying for it. I don't really care about the ethics involved as WoW is a game, and the bank alt selling the item is anonymous. I've also always used my main to post auctions, until today as well.

My plan was to see if this unethical arrow pricing is even worth it. I purchased one stack of 1000 ice blade arrows for 20g. Already on my AH there were people listing stacks of 100 for 20g. I split the arrows up and undercut everyone by a few silver. I waited.

About 12 hours later there were no purchases. Undercutters had gotten the best of the market and stacks of 100 arrows were selling for 5g. Still a good profit, but not 1000%. I undercut again, and waited. 6 hours last my arrows are listed at 4g per stack of 100, and the lowest on the AH, and still no buyers.

It appears people have either become hip to the scam, or no one needs arrows. Is this scam even worth it? In my opinion .....no. I like to move things. I like to sell everything I post, everyday. I don't always sell 100%, but 0% of my postings sold isn't worth it. The only way I could see this working is if someone purchased 1000 arrows f0r 20g, and everyday they just kept posting their 100 stacks at 20g and no one undercut them. Eventually they would sell and the seller would be up 180g. 180g can be earned in much easier, less scrupulous ways. Lets not forget 180g can be earned be earned much quicker in other ways too. Who wants to keep posting the same auctions until they sell? Not me.

One Time Money Maker!

Here is something I never knew. Stonekeeper shards can be used to purchase BOA consumables that yields 2000 honor. This is a great way to honor up some alts. This is even better for getting some epic gems, provided you have no use for actual honor.

I personally stopped PvP during the BC. I've only purchased one item ever with these Stonekeeper shards. If your like me, chances are you have a stockpile of these shards and don't even know it. Through my 4 80's I had enough shards to purchase over 90 of these things. That's 180k honor, or 18 epic gems. I cut 18 Solid Mygestic Zircons. I posted 10 of them last night and they all sold for slightly over 200g. Market low price was about 226g. I posted the rest today and hopefully they sell as well. All in all it's almost like getting 3600g for free, since I have no use for honor.

While Stonekeeper shards aren't worth farming, if you have them already, and aren't in need of honor they are a great way to earn some extra gold. I'm lucky to be on a server where my faction controls wintergrasp most of the time. I will be running a lot of random dungeons in the future and will probably have another stock pile to cash in with in a few weeks. No farming, it just goes hand in hand with running dungeons.

A reply.

Just my 2 Copper was talking about market control today, which got me thinking, here is my reply:

I got to interject here, why bother trying to control a market? I'm making a lot of gold per day simply channeling a variety of different items into the AH. Flasks, Dragon's Eye, Epic Gems, Titansteel bars, Titanium, Herbs, Ore, Ebonweave, Spellweave, Moonweave. Basically everything that takes advantage of my professions.

I normally post small amounts of items that are undercut by a few gold. Posting too many of a certain items drives undercutters into a rage. I'd really prefer my competition to not see me as a threat. There is no point in going to war. At the end of the day I'm still making a ton of gold. With that said, I do agree attacking the source of a specific item is a good strategy in attempting to control a market. It isn't fool proof though, as your competition may have a reliable farmer, or may have a stockpile of mats, or most commonly in the WOW AH game .....not really care if they turn a profit or not. A lot of AH undercutting is really just ego. I've seen prices for items go from a huge profit to well below cost of mats because two players want to prevent their competition from selling. This kind of "market control" is pointless, and futile. Even if you knock your completion out, there will always be new players as getting into the WOW AH game takes no real risk. It doesn't even take capital if you get lucky, and are smart.

Bottom line. I'm happy with the gold I'm earning per day. Even with all the new gear I've had to gem and enchant, I'm still banking 1-2k per day. I don't wish for the lion’s share of the pot. Gold (as well as real money) is really pointless once you get to a point. I’ve never seen anything sell for over 20k, so if you got 40k you have enough for anything x 2. It’s like being a millionaire while still being concerned about making more money…..although I do find it fun to horde gold, so it’s not completely pointless for me. Perhaps I have a mental disorder.
